Legislation Overview

Title: Firearms; Mental Illness; Surrender of Firearms

Description: Requires firearm owners who have been disqualified from owning a firearm due to mental illness and who underwent involuntary hospitalization to immediately surrender their firearms to the chief of police upon receiving written notification and authorizes the chief of police to take possession of the firearms if the owner fails to comply. Effective January 7, 2059. (SD1)
