R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Nucor Corporation is celebrating the 40th |
|
anniversary of its Nucor Steel--Texas plant in Jewett during 2015; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1975, the Jewett facility was one of |
|
the first electric arc furnace plants in the United States; the |
|
electric arc process for melting and recycling scrap steel is more |
|
cost-effective than integrated iron and steel production with blast |
|
furnaces, and it significantly reduces pollution; and |
|
WHEREAS, Nucor was an industry leader in the shift from |
|
refining to recycling as the primary source of steel, and today, it |
|
is the nation's largest steel producer and largest recycler, |
|
handling approximately 19 million tons of scrap metal each year; on |
|
an annual basis, its three Texas divisions have a recycling |
|
capacity of 1.5 million tons of steel and a production capacity of |
|
more than 1.6 million tons; the company employs approximately 1,100 |
|
Texans at these plants; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 2010, the Nucor divisions in Jewett, Terrell, and |
|
Grapeland were awarded OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Star |
|
Status from the federal Occupational Safety and Health |
|
Administration; moreover, Nucor Steel--Texas earned a Texas |
|
Environmental Excellence Award for its efforts in resource |
|
conservation, waste reduction, and pollution prevention; and |
|
WHEREAS, Nucor Steel--Texas has contributed significantly to |
|
the prosperity of Jewett over the past four decades, and it is |
|
indeed fitting to recognize this milestone in the history of the |
|
company; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Nucor Corporation on the 40th |
|
anniversary of its Nucor Steel--Texas plant in Jewett and extend to |
|
all those associated with the company sincere best wishes for |
|
continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the company as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
