  1  1    Section 1.  Section 809.5, subsection 1, paragraph f,
  1  2 subparagraph (3), Code 2015, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    (3)  Notwithstanding subparagraph subparagraphs (1) and
  1  4  (2), firearms or ammunition with an aggregate fair market
  1  5 value equal to or less than five hundred dollars shall be
  1  6 deposited with the department of public safety. The firearms
  1  7 or ammunition may be held by the department of public safety
  1  8 and be used for law enforcement, testing, or comparisons by the
  1  9 criminalistics laboratory, or may be destroyed or disposed of
  1 10 by the department of public safety in accordance with section
  1 11 809.21.
  1 12                           EXPLANATION
  1 13 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
  1 14 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly.
  1 15    The bill requires that all firearms and ammunition seized by
  1 16 law enforcement pursuant to Code chapter 809 (disposition of
  1 17 seized property) and deemed abandoned or for which the owner
  1 18 is unable to be located shall be deposited with the department
  1 19 of public safety regardless of the fair market value of the
  1 20 firearms or ammunition.
