A HOUSE RESOLUTION urging the legislative council to
establish an interim study committee to study gun violence and
the associated health effects.
Whereas, More than 100,000 individuals a year are injured
by guns, including more than 30,000 people a year who die
through homicides, suicides, and accidental deaths;
Whereas, America has suffered massacres including 12 in
2012 and the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School,
in which 20 first graders and six educators were shot;
Whereas, There is growing public concern about the effect
of mental health problems on gun violence;
Whereas, There is concern about the effectiveness of
current legislation on gun ownership, sales, and registration;
and
Whereas, It behooves the State of Indiana to consider all
possible solutions to gun violence throughout the United States:
Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the legislative council is urged to establish an
interim study committee to study gun violence and the associated
health effects.
SECTION 2. That the committee, if established, shall operate
under the direction of the legislative council, and that the committee
shall issues a final report when directed to do so by the council.
