1		SENATE RESOLUTION
2		WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3		learn of the death of Steve D. Spurgetis of Moline, who passed
4		away on August 20, 2015; and
5		WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was born in Lexington, Nebraska on
6		April 29, 1933 to James C. and Nikoletta Kasteliotis Spurgetis;
7		he served in the United States Army during the Korean War from
8		1953 to 1955, stationed in Germany; he married Margit
9		Lagerquist on September 8, 1963 in Moline; and
10		WHEREAS, In July of 1956, Steve Spurgetis joined the Moline
11		Fire Department (MFD); after 27 years of dedicated service, he
12		retired as Captain of Station 2; following his retirement, he
13		served as the President of the Fire Department Pension Fund,
14		the first President of the fire department retirees, a charter
15		member of the Illinois Association of Retired Fire Fighters of
16		Illinois, and a past officer at MFD Local 581; he was
17		instrumental in creating the MFD memorial at Ben Butterworth to
18		honor deceased fire fighters of Moline; and
19		WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis served in many capacities at
20		various organizations; he was the Secretary Treasurer and later
21		President of the Moline Municipal Credit Union; and

1		WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was a member of Moline Veterans of
2		Foreign Wars 2130 and Moline American Legion Post 246; he
3		served on the board of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where
4		he was a member; he also belonged to Rock Island Elks 980, the
5		Viking Club, and the Illinois Association Of Retired Fire
6		Fighters; he enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, and crossword
7		puzzles; he helped the fire department, city employees, and
8		retirees to prepare and deliver food baskets to the needy each
9		Thanksgiving; and
10		WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was preceded in death by his wife,
11		Margit; his parents; his 2 brothers; and 1 sister; and
12		WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis is survived by his stepdaughter,
13		Sharon (Tony) Holmes; his grandchildren, Tony (Kelly) Holmes,
14		Jr., Nicole Holmes, and Heather Holmes; his
15		great-grandchildren, Tony Holmes, Bryce Holmes, Alyssa Holmes,
16		Lucas Richards, Janalee Richards, and Braxton Anthony; his
17		great-great-grandchildren, Anthony Steven Joseph Holmes, III,
18		Kaydyn Holmes, and Jordan Holmes; his sister, Mary Spurgetis;
19		and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
20		RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
21		ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22		Steve D. Spurgetis, and extend our sincere condolences to his
23		family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
