SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Alice Lucille Tregay of Chicago; and
4 WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was born in Evanston on November 14,
51929 to Roy and Fannie (nee Fuller) Hicks; she lived in
6Evanston for most of her young life, attending Foster School
7and Evanston Township High School; in 1947, she married Vincent
8Lindsey; in 1964, after the passing of her husband, she married
9James Tregay; as an adult, she went back to school and attended
10Southeast Jr. College (now Olive-Harvey) and Roosevelt
11University; and
12 WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was an integral part of the group
13that from 1962 to 1966 protested school overcrowding and
14segregation in black neighborhoods; she was also involved in
15helping to put an end to housing discrimination; she worked
16closely with Operation Breadbasket (now Rainbow PUSH) in its
17struggle against discrimination against people of color in the
18hiring practices of large companies; and
19 WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was very active in politics; she
20worked for numerous elected officials, including Aldermen
21William Cousins and Abner Mikva, Congressman Ralph Metcalfe,
22President Jimmy Carter, Vice-President Walter Mondale, Mayor

1Harold Washington, and United States Senator Carol Mosley
2Braun; she also worked on the presidential campaigns of Rev.
3Jesse Jackson; she was chief lobbyist for the Black Illinois
4Legislative Lobby as part of her work with The Woodlawn
5Organization; after discovering the key to a successful
6election was voter registration, she became instrumental in the
7creation of the Political Education Division of Rainbow PUSH,
8becoming the Director until her retirement; and
9 WHEREAS, Alice Tregay has been recognized for her
10outstanding work in civil rights and community service by
11numerous organizations and has received many prestigious
12awards, most notably one presented to her in March of 2004 by
13Illinois State Senator Barack Obama; and
14 WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was always a hard worker and worked
15all her life at various jobs; she worked for the Illinois
16Department of Human Rights for 8 years; and
17 WHEREAS, Alice Tregay is survived by her husband, James;
18her 3 children, Alice (Robert) Fluegge, David (Clare) Tregay,
19and Dawn Emmett; her 6 children, Derrick (Rachel) Fluegge, Adam
20(Janette) Hickman, Jason Hickman, Robert (Heather) Fluegge,
21and Rachel and Erika Emmett; her 10 great-grandchildren; her
22brother, Sanders (Karen) Hicks; and numerous cousins and
23friends who were also her family; therefore, be it

1 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Alice Lucille Tregay, and extend our sincere condolences to her
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
5further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Alice Tregay as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
