HOUSE RESOLUTION
2    WHEREAS, Every day, 125 people in the United States are
3killed by gun violence, and more than 260 people are shot and
4wounded, with an average of more than 19,000 gun homicides
5every year; and
6    WHEREAS, People in the United States are 26 times more
7likely to die by gun homicide than people in other high-income
8countries; and
9    WHEREAS, Protecting public safety in the communities they
10serve is among a state lawmaker's highest responsibilities;
11and
12    WHEREAS, Support for the Second Amendment rights of
13law-abiding citizens goes together with keeping guns away from
14those who are a danger to themselves or others; and
15    WHEREAS, Gun violence prevention is more important than
16ever as we see gun violence continue to impact communities
17across the country; and
18    WHEREAS, In January 2013, Hadiya Pendleton was tragically
19shot and killed at age 15, and on June 6, 2025, to recognize
20her 28th birthday, June 2, 1997, people across the United

1States will recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day and
2wear orange in tribute to Hadiya Pendleton and other victims
3of gun violence and the loved ones of those victims; and
4    WHEREAS, This idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya
5Pendleton's friends who asked their classmates to commemorate
6her life by wearing orange; they chose this color because
7hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters
8when out in the woods, and orange is a color that symbolizes
9the value of human life; and
10    WHEREAS, Anyone can join this campaign by pledging to wear
11orange on June 6th, the first Friday in June 2025, to help
12raise awareness about gun violence; and
13    WHEREAS, By wearing orange on June 6, 2025, people across
14the United States will raise awareness about gun violence and
15honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors; and
16    WHEREAS, A commitment to reduce gun violence and a pledge
17to do all we can to keep firearms out of the hands of people
18who should not have access to them and encourage responsible
19gun ownership will help keep our families and communities
20safe; therefore, be it

1HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
2we declare June 6, 2025 as Gun Violence Awareness Day in the
3State of Illinois, and we encourage all citizens to support
4their communities' efforts to prevent the tragic effects of
5gun violence and to honor and value human lives.
